Caged Birds

“Caged Bird

A free bird leaps on the back of the wind

and floats downstream till the current ends

and dips his wing in the orange suns rays and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage

can seldom see through his bars of rage

his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill

of things unknown but longed for still

and his tune is heard on the distant hill

for the caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze

and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees

and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams

his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream

his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill

of things unknown but longed for still

and his tune is heard on the distant hill

for the caged bird sings of freedom.”

Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Do You Love Me Because I’m Beautiful Or Am I Beautiful Because You Love Me

One Day Man Asks GOD What’s The Difference Between Your Love & My Love! God Smiled & Replied a Bird In Sky Is My Love & a Bird In Cage Is YOUR Love

I really feel it is cruel to keep a bird in a cage, where it can hardly move freely. But who am I to judge, for we do have two dogs as pets, and although they are free all the time, sometimes we do have to tie them up.

I won this Bird Cage in a Diwali photo contest in Facebook. Actually, I was thinking of using it to keep lighted Diyas/ Lamps/ Tea light Candles during the festive seasons.

This is the photo that won me the prize in Facebook:

My dear friend Joseph had commented that he was somehow reminded of ABBA song Eagle, So I thought why not place the lyrics of the song here:

They came flying from far away, now I'm under their spell
I love hearing the stories that they tell
They've seen places beyond my land and they've found new horizons
They speak strangely but I understand

And I dream I'm an eagle
And I dream I can spread my wings

Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly
Over mountains and forests and seas
And to go anywhere that I please

As all good friends we talk all night, and we fly wing to wing
I have questions and they know everything
There's no limit to what I feel, we climb higher and higher
Am I dreaming or is it all real?

Is it true I'm an eagle?
Is it true I can spread my wings?

Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky
(I'm an eagle)
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly
(What a feeling)
Over mountains and forests and seas
And to go anywhere that I please

And I dream I'm an eagle
And I dream I can spread my wings

Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky
(I'm an eagle)
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly
(What a feeling)
Over mountains and forests and seas

Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky
(I'm an eagle)
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly
(What a feeling)
Over mountains and forests and seas
And to go anywhere that I please.

I too love this song very much. Thanks Joseph for mentioning  it.
By the way, as you must have noticed these are ceramic birds, and they are having fun modelling for me!!!

Instead of writing about my travels, today I have written on a different topic for a change.

  1. Thanks for the nice post and beautiful photos. When I first read the title, I thought you were going to write something about the CBI - which the Indian Supreme Court described as a Caged Bird.

  2. I too was taken in by the misleading title but what a feast of poem by Mary Angelou.
Your narration of the conversation with God and his reply summed up the essence of the poem
You did well to utilse the gift of cage aesthetically. Thanks

    1. I am sorry you were mislead by the title, it was not my intention, I only titled it appropriate to my topic.
And the gift too was not meant to be used as a cage, it was given with idea it would be used as a lantern holder, or to be used in a similar way. people who like to keep birds as pet can also use it in that way.
Thanks for dropping by after a long gap. I hope you are doing well. Are you in Chennai or in the US?
      Be well KP.

    1. Yes it is a very good poem, and it is wrong to cage a bird, which is supposed to f'ly freely. Though bird breeders may have a different story or argument.

  6. Hello Rama, please accept my congratulation on winning the contest with an amazing photo. I loved the poem you reproduced and the short story. I agree we should not keep birds in cages.

However, you know there is a thriving pet business in dogs, birds and ornamental fishes. Every year there is an International exhibition for pets in Kochi. Thousands of pet lovers throng this exhibition and buy them at fancy prices. There is way side pet shop near my house where ornamental fishes and birds are being sold and shop keeper earns a living. He has three daughters.
Most of these pets are bought by parents at the instigation of small children. Children are thrilled to have pets.

Yes we should not have birds as pets. My neighbor has a caged parrot. The parrot does make noise especially when there is a stranger and alerts the owners. Sometimes this parrot responds to cries of birds in the nearby trees. This is the sad part of it. May be the parrot wants to be free.

Well, I should stop now. I enjoyed this post very much. As I was reading the poem, I thought of the song by ABBA = THE EAGLE although there is no connection between the two. Best wishes

  10. I love Maya Angelou. Those pictures are beautiful, but yes the birds or all animals for that matter deserve to be free. It's sad to see them not live the lives they were given because we cage them.
